Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to stay at Elwood Care Center?

There are a lot of factors that go into determining the cost of a stay at Elwood Care Center. For example, there is the "Level of Care". This is how much care it takes to provide an individual safe and complete care. The more care an individual requires, the higher their level of care is. This increases the cost of their stay.

Which insurance does Elwood Care Center accept?

We accept traditional Medicare, Medicaid, and supplemental insurances. Medicare will not cover a long-term stay in a nursing home, but it will cover rehabilitation stays in a skilled nursing facility. Following a qualifying hospital stay (admission for at least three consecutive days), Medicare Part A will cover the first 20 days in a skilled nursing facility if the patient begins receiving care within 30 days of their hospital discharge.

If you meet strict eligibility requirements, Medicaid will pay for nursing home costs.  Medicaid eligibility is dependent on income and personal resources.

Within Medicare are programs referred to as "advantage plans". We are in network with some of these plans.  Call our business office manager Amy Dytrych for further explaination of your insurance questions.

Can I take a tour?

Absolutly. You can call and arrange for a tour with our leadership team (see contacts). You can also always drop by anytime.

Are Therapy services available?

Physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy are offered in-house Monday through Friday. These services are available for our Residents as well as members of the community. We offer the full range of therapy services to support the health, mobility, and overall well-being of our residents and community members. Our licensed therapists work closely with each resident and their care team to develop personalized therapy plans that support recovery, independence, and quality of life.

Can I bring my loved one's personal items?

We encourage each resident to make their room as home-like as possible.  From wall hangings to bed spreads, anything to make the resident more comfortable is supported. Keep in mind that there are limits to what a resident can have in their rooms as dictated by the Fire Marshall and Center for Medicare and Medicaid services. For example, extension cords are not allowed. During Christmas time, families like to bring in live plants. Poinsettias are poisonous and not allowed. If ever there is a question, just ask!

Can we keep our own Doctors? How do appointments work?

Yes!  You chose your physician.  We have a dedicated medical records director, whose job is to make all appointments you may need. We transport residents to see providers within a 50 mile radius.  We utilize our handicap accessable vehicles to safely cordinate residents' care with their chosen physician.  When we transport residents, you can always join them at the appointment.  If it is safe for the resident, a family member can also take them to their appointments if that is preferred.

How do private rooms work?

We offer both private rooms and companion rooms. While our companion rooms provide a comfortable and social living arrangement, our private rooms offer a more individualized and quiet space for those who prefer additional privacy. Please note that selecting a private room does incur an additional charge due to the enhanced level of personal space. Private rooms may have a waiting list that we can place you on if you are interested.

Can you accommodate my dietary needs? How do meals work?

Yes! Meals are thoughtfully planned and prepared to ensure they are both nutritious and enjoyable for our residents. We serve three balanced meals each day—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—along with snacks which are available throughout the day. Our dietary team works closely with healthcare providers to accommodate individual dietary needs, restrictions, and preferences, including special diets such as diabetic-friendly, low-sodium, or texture-modified meals.

Meals are typically served in a communal dining area to promote social interaction and a sense of community, but residents do have the option to enjoy their meals in their rooms if they prefer. Our staff is always available to assist residents who may need help with eating, and we regularly update our menus based on seasonal availability and resident feedback to keep mealtimes fresh and satisfying.

What is the difference between skilled nursing and assisted living?

Skilled nursing provides 24/7 medical care by licensed nurses for individuals with complex medical needs.  Assisted Living is designed for those who need help with daily health maintenance needs. but do not require constant medical supervision.

Are nurses and caregivers available around the clock?

For our nursing home, both nurses and caregivers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This around-the-clock coverage ensures that residents receive timely care, assistance, and supervision at all times—whether it’s help with daily activities, medication administration, or responding to an emergency. Our goal is to provide peace of mind for both residents and their families, knowing that professional support is always close by.

In our assisted living community, a caregiver is available on-site daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to assist residents with their personal and health maintenance care needs, daily activities, and general support.

How do you support family involvement?

Families serving families is our mission.  We want to care for our residents just as their families would.  Family involvement is very important in honoring your loved one that we are caring for.  We appreciate constant communication and a partnership with families in order to best meet the resident's needs. You are an important part of your loved one's support system.

What is your visitation policy?

Families are welcome and encouraged to visit often! Dining with your resident is always an option for a low fee for your meal.  We have open visiting hours, with safety measures in place when necessary.  We also offer virtual visit options. We host family events throughout the year.
